Monaco will not exercise their option to sign Simon Adingra permanently from Sunderland, according to Nice-Matin.

The clause attached to his loan was put between €5 million and €10 million, roughly £4.3 million to £8.5 million, though some reports at the time suggested it was closer to £17 million.

The Ivory Coast international joined on loan in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three and assisting two. Often used as a wing-back, he offered attacking threat but his displays were mixed.

With Monaco passing on the option, Adingra is set to return to Sunderland this summer. Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris will need to decide whether he is reintegrated, moved on again or considered as part of the wider Premier League group.

His international standing has endured. He was named in Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad and came on in the 74th minute of their 2-1 defeat against Germany, though he missed last season’s AFCON.

Sunderland are now reassessing his role as they shape the squad for the new campaign, with another call awaiting Ghisolfi in a busy window.
