Manchester United have been told to find an upgrade on Mason Mount, who is currently playing second fiddle to Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils spent £60 million to acquire the England international from Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

Unfortunately for the attacking midfielder, his time in Carrington has been hampered by injuries, which have often derailed his momentum.

In Michael Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Mount is considered a backup for Fernandes in the No.10. And since the Portuguese star is the club’s captain and main talisman, the Englishman has to accept limited playing time.

But while Mount is seemingly at peace with his current role, Louis Saha believes it’s time for United to find themselves an upgrade on the Chelsea academy product.

“Manchester United could have signed another playmaker to play as the second striker or a more creative midfielder who is a better option than Mason Mount to replace him,” said the former MUFC striker in his interview with Betano (via Metro).

“He is another good player, but he is not someone who is going to accelerate a game for Manchester United.

“He has been very unfortunate with injuries, but he has never shown me that he is that kind of player who in hot moments, is going to take the pressure and responsibility alongside Bruno Fernandes.”

While Saha brings up a valid point by suggesting that Mount has seldom been decisive for United, the Portsmouth native was an absolute game changer when he first made his breakthrough at Chelsea.

At Man Utd, the Englishman hasn’t been enough on the pitch to leave an indelible mark, whether due to injuries or the manager’s hierarchy.

Nevertheless, Mount has always been appreciated by his MUFC coaches, especially Ruben Amorim, who reportedly tried to bring him to AC Milan in the summer.

As for Carrick, he entrusted him with a deeper role during pre-season. Mount’s exploits in the double pivot alongside Andrey Santos sparked reports of INEOS abandoning the pursuit of the third midfielder, with the former Chelsea star permanently moved to central midfield.

In the end, these speculations proved wide of the mark, with Carlos Baleba joining the club. However, Mount’s ability to cover several roles, rather than merely serving as Bruno’s understudy, renders him a valuable player for the cause.

It should also be noted that Mount’s late introduction against Fulham helped United raise their tempo, culminating in Matheus Cunha’s equaliser.
