Nuno Espirito Santo says he is “very pleased” and “very proud” to have been named West Ham United’s new manager.
The Portuguese tactician signed a three-year contract to become the club’s head coach just hours after Graham Potter was sacked from the role on Saturday morning.
Potter had overseen just six wins in 25 games since replacing Julen Lopetegui in January. The Hammers currently sit 19th in the table after winning only one of their opening five Premier League games this season.
Nuno took his first training session with the West Ham squad on Saturday morning, with his first game in charge coming against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this coming Monday night.
“I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United,” the former Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur boss said.
“My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”
Nuno was only out of work for a matter of works after leaving Nottingham Forest earlier this month, despite signing a new contract in the summer after the the Midlands outfit qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
The 51-year-old’s exit came after he admitted in August that his relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was “not the same” and “not so good as it was” last season.
Meanwhile, Graham Potter has released a statement via the League Manager’s Association following his sacking.
“I am incredibly disappointed to be leaving West Ham United Football Club, particularly without being able to achieve what we set out to achieve at the start of our journey in East London,” he said.
“I do however fully acknowledge that the results have just not been good enough up to now.
“Firstly, thank you to the board for offering me the opportunity to manage the team during the past 8 months. It was an honour and a privilege to manage such a historic club, which holds such strong values for footballing traditions and passion for the game.
“I’d like to thank all the staff at the club who made me feel so welcome, the playing squad and their continued efforts during my time – and lastly the fans, who have been so supportive during what has been a difficult journey at times.
“I wish the club nothing but the best of luck for the future. Thank you and goodbye for now.
“Come on you Irons. GP x.”
