One month after being linked to Valencia, Orlando Gill has become one of the World Cup’s standout performers, knocking out one of the favourites, Germany, and making any move to Mestalla more complicated.
The 198 centimetre goalkeeper kept Paraguay alive to penalties, then saved from Kai Havertz, who had converted his previous five for the national team, and from Woltemade. "Sí, por qué no. Estaría bueno pegar el salto. Veremos qué pasa con este Mundial", he said on Cadena Cope.
Gill, 26, plays in Argentina for San Lorenzo de Almagro, and Paraguay will face France or Sweden in the last 16.
Valencia are seeking a goalkeeper to compete with North Macedonian Stole Dimitrievski, but Gill’s surge in value has turned him into a far more complex target. The club have been narrowing the search to low-cost options prepared to start as back-up, a profile that does not fit the Paraguayan.
Before the tournament, San Lorenzo planned to consider offers above €4 million, a price now likely to climb. Specialist portals put his market value at €6 million, and interest from clubs in Europe, including in Türkiye and Italy, had already been noted before his standout campaign.
