Piccinato aims for historic run with Corinthians in Copa das Campeãs

Corinthians takes to the field this Wednesday (28th) at 9:30 AM (Brasília time) for one of the most important commitments in its women's football history. In London, the Brabas face Gotham FC from the United States in the semifinals of the first edition of the FIFA Women's Champions Cup.

On the eve of the match, coach Lucas Piccinato highlighted the significance of the moment for the club and the symbolism of participating in an intercontinental competition organized by FIFA. For the coach, the challenge goes beyond the sporting aspect and represents an opportunity to showcase the Corinthians project on a global scale. “Every game within this club has always carried great strength. But competing in the first intercontinental competition held by FIFA has an even greater weight,” stated the coach.

Even against opponents considered favorites by part of the international scene, Piccinato made it clear that Corinthians did not come to England just to participate. The coach reinforced the team's ambition and confidence in the quality built over the past few years.

“We want to leave here with a great result: to shock the world, because I believe that everyone might think that the favorites are the North American (Gotham FC) and the European (Arsenal) teams, due to their high financial capacity.”

“We want to show our quality, the Brazilian football we have, and leave here with a great title. I think this could be the greatest achievement in Corinthians' history,” he added.

Aware of the physical, technical, and emotional demands of the competition, Piccinato emphasized the need for mental preparation for matches that may differ from the standard faced in the national calendar.

“We have to be mentally ready for all the duels. To play a 100-minute game that has a different intensity from those we play in Brazil,” he explained.

“We must be ready for all the possibilities the game can bring, whether taking the lead, falling behind, turning the score with 0-0, and facing all the mental duels within the game. Creating a good strategy and being mentally strong carry the same weight.”

Accustomed to decisions and titles, the coach also highlighted the symbolic value of experiencing something unprecedented. For him, competing in such a significant event outside South America is a privilege that can further boost the team's performance.

“It's a challenge that takes us out of our comfort zone, but at the same time, it's delightful to experience all of this. Facing great teams from different continents makes us want to bring out our best.”

Since 2017, Corinthians has built a dominant path in women's football, accumulating seven Brazilian Championship titles and six Libertadores victories. Now, the club seeks to transform this continental hegemony into global prominence.

“It will certainly be a magical experience for us to learn, live, win, and work in the best way to leave here with a great title,” he concluded.

If they advance against Gotham FC, Corinthians will compete in the final of the competition on February 1st, against the winner of the match between Arsenal, from England, and ASFAR, from Morocco.
