The 31-year-old has now rejected the Magpies’ approach, ending negotiations over a potential switch.

He could be holding out for a bigger move, with Italian giants Inter Milan and AC Milan also reportedly interested in signing him.

Hojbjerg is the latest player to turn down a move to Newcastle this summer. Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi also rejected them before joining Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively.

He would have been a good signing for Newcastle, who are looking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle have signed Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba to bolster their midfield options, but they want to add more experience to their squad.

They have also been linked with Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, but face competition from Aston Villa.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation. He could push for the addition of another midfielder, particularly if Joelinton also leaves the club.

Bamba and Joe Willock played in the double pivot in the recent 2-1 friendly win over Valencia. The duo failed to impress, further strengthening the case for injecting more quality into their midfield.

Newcastle face Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg in their final warm-up games before their opening Premier League match against Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 23.
