Wrexham shared a video involving co-owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds that took a swipe at Southampton over Spygate.

Wrexham co-owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds referenced Southampton’s Spygate in a light-hearted video advert ahead of their meeting on Saturday.

As was widely reported, Saints were expelled from the play-offs last season after an employee was caught spying on Middlesbrough ahead of their semi-final first leg.

Even though Tonda Eckert’s side won over the two games, they were kicked out of the play-offs, and they were hit with a four-point deduction that has been applied to this season.

Whilst it didn’t specifically impact Wrexham at the time, they did finish seventh in the Championship, so if Saints had been kicked out of the play-offs before the first game, they may have had a case of replacing them.

But, it wasn’t to be for the Red Dragons, although it appears those at the Racecourse Ground haven’t forgotten about what went on, with Reynolds having commented on the issue at the time as well.

That’s after the club shared a video that advertised their sponsor Firefox, with Mac and Reynolds appearing from behind a tree that was strikingly similar to where the Saints employee was caught.

As well as that, they spoke about the importance of privacy, as well as referencing Oxford and Ipswich, which were the two other clubs Southampton admitted to spying on, along with Boro.

“Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy. Specifically, how to prevent spies from seeing what you're doing on the internet.

“Yeah, because there are some things that you just don’t want any other people to see, you know, like your search queries about warts, or, uh, I don’t know, how to run a football club.

“And this message isn’t just for people in Wrexham, or Oxford, or Ipswich, or Middlesbrough. No, because privacy, that’s important to people everywhere, and that’s why Firefox is our front-of-kit sponsor. Refreshing, huh? An organisation that actually respects your privacy.”

Wrexham vs Southampton will have an extra edge to it

Firstly, this is clearly a joke by Mac and Reynolds, and it’s one that has gone down very well going by the reaction and numbers on social media, as it’s good to see them involved in such a way.

But, there’s no denying that Wrexham will feel aggrieved at Southampton, because if they had been caught during the season, and hit with a points deduction at the time, it could’ve changed things in the play-off race.

Ultimately, they did fall short, finishing two points behind sixth-placed Hull City, and nine points behind Saints, but you can understand why they may be annoyed at how it all played out.

Therefore, this game might have an added edge to it when Saints make the trip to Wales, although they will feel confident given their form, and they thrashed Phil Parkinson’s side 5-1 when the teams met earlier this year.

Wrexham must use the atmosphere to their advantage after heavy West Ham defeat

If there is added spice to this game, it could be exactly what Wrexham need, as they must bounce back after their terrible 6-0 defeat to West Ham last week.

Whilst the Hammers were excellent, and they do boast an outstanding attack, it was an embarrassing display by Wrexham, so the manager and fans will expect a response.

But, the supporters will be behind the players from the first whistle, and Wrexham must use that to their advantage as they look to overcome Saints to get a big win going into the international break.
