Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri has reiterated his support for Lazio’s Stadio Flaminio project, while stressing the club must make changes to meet heritage demands.

According to Radio Radio, Lazio need to incorporate modifications sought by the Superintendency, the body that safeguards archaeological sites and historic buildings. The Biancocelesti filed renovation plans earlier this year, targeting completion by the end of 2029 or the start of 2030, but progress has been slowed by bureaucracy.

The committee is keen to preserve key elements of Pier Luigi Nervi’s original Flaminio design, unlike Roma’s new stadium, which is being built from scratch.

Gualtieri said that once the Superintendency issue is resolved, Lazio will seek final approval from the municipality, a step he hopes can be concluded before the end of 2026.

He added that the city will make the necessary adjustments to minimise disruption for neighbouring areas, and he thanked Lazio for their desire to restore a historic site that has fallen into ruin.
