Rotherham United have appointed former Sunderland and Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark as head coach as they fight to retain their League One status.

The club said in a statement that Clark has been appointed first-team manager on a contract running to the end of the 2025/26 season, describing the deal as short term. A press conference will unveil him before the weekend visit to league leaders Lincoln City, where he will oversee his first match.

The Millers sit 22nd, five points adrift of Blackpool with a game in hand. Tuesday’s 5-0 defeat at Peterborough United prompted the departure of head coach Matt Hamshaw.

Rotherham moved quickly after Hamshaw’s exit, installing Clark on Wednesday afternoon.

The 53-year-old previously led Huddersfield Town and later had spells in charge of Birmingham City, Blackpool, Kilmarnock and Bury.

Most recently he managed Al-Merrikh in Sudan, either side of a brief stint with Al-Ittihad in Oman, and he also worked at Blyth Spartans. Born in Wallsend, Clark played almost 200 times for Newcastle, joined Sunderland in 1997, then moved to Fulham before returning to St James’ Park, retiring in 2006.
