SAFC fans heading for AC Milan away face air fares up to 13 times higher around the San Siro tie on Thursday 10 December. Sunderland qualified by beating Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.
According to Sunderland Echo, an EasyJet return from Manchester, out on the Wednesday and back on Friday 11 December, is £1,092, compared with £81 a week earlier.
From Edinburgh, Ryanair’s return on the same dates is £545, versus £127 the week before. With no regular direct returns from Teesside or Newcastle, Manchester and Edinburgh are the closest direct options.
Before Milan, Sunderland visit Torreense at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria on Thursday 15 October. From Manchester, EasyJet shows no availability on Wednesday 14 October, and a Friday 16 October return is £443, £100 more than the previous Friday.
Hotel rates look steadier. Radisson’s Santa Sofia is £296 for Thursday 10 December, and Lisbon’s Holiday Inn Express is £145 for Thursday 15 October, both broadly in line with the previous week.
Hays Travel offers one-night packages including flights and hotel, departing on matchday and returning the next afternoon. Prices start at £622 for Torreense, £589 for Milan, £543 for Anderlecht on Thursday 21 January, and £594 for Lech Poznan on Thursday 22 October.
Fan excitement remains, though costs could deter some. Michael Ganley is considering a minibus via the Hull ferry to cut spend, while Paul Dobson estimates about £2,500 to attend all games and plans to drive to Anderlecht. Prices are subject to change.
