Sandro Tonali's agent explains Milan exit and early Newcastle struggles | OneFootball

Sandro Tonali’s representative has outlined the emotional strain behind his €67m switch from AC Milan to Newcastle United, saying the Italy midfielder initially hesitated and then struggled to adapt in England after his summer 2023 move.

"We made the first step because we realised that Milan were becoming different," said Riso. "I know Milan well, and this was not giving the same sensations as that historic club. Talking to Sandro, we considered that going to the Premier League was a fascinating challenge. He had courage to go, because he was one of the most important players in the Scudetto-winning side, but he was a visionary." He was speaking on the Colpi da Maestro podcast.

Tonali grew up a Milan supporter and was central to their Serie A title success. After stepping up from Brescia, he also needed time to make an impact in his first year at San Siro. Moving to the North East, the early weeks were again difficult as he adjusted to new surroundings.

"It was very difficult for him, in the first few weeks he was sad, but he got a handle on things and made his mark, as always," Riso explained.

Three years after his arrival in England, Tottenham paid €108m to take him to north London. "It was a crazy move for the numbers, but also for the responsibility," the agent admitted. He now believes Tonali is in the right place, fully embracing life in the Premier League.
