Santos have been cleared by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva after a fan spat at Mirassol’s Reinaldo during Sunday’s Brasileirão match at Vila Belmiro.

According to Globo.com, the court took into account that the club swiftly identified the perpetrator.

The supporter is being prosecuted and could be barred from stadiums for up to three years.

Santos had been charged under Article 213 of the Brazilian Sports Justice Code, which covers failure to prevent or repress disorder at a sports venue. Session auditor Gabriel Fonseca’s position was backed unanimously by the other members.

The club were still punished for delays, five minutes before kick-off and one minute before the restart, and fined R$ 5,000.
