Santos’ Conselho Deliberativo will resume voting on the new club statute on Thursday night, focusing on articles seen as political safeguards.

According to Diario Do Peixe, debate began on Monday 18 and was picked up again on Thursday 21, with organised fan groups protesting at Vila Belmiro on both dates.

Article 32 is due to be voted tonight, setting eligibility to run for the presidency. The initial commission draft required three terms on the Conselho Deliberativo, which would have made most candidacies unviable.

Several amendments have been tabled. Councillors will choose between demanding two terms, one term, or retaining the current model that does not require prior council service to stand.

Other sections already addressed include conversion into a SAF and the waiting period for voting rights in article 24. The plan to permit a sale of up to 90% of shares was rejected, with an amendment approved to ensure the club keeps 20% and can sell up to 80%.

The council is voting on each article separately. Once approved, the full text will go to a members’ assembly, where associates will vote on the entire statute rather than article by article.
