Santos have issued a medical update on Neymar, who is recovering from a grade two injury to his right calf, saying all his examinations were provided to the CBF after the federation challenged the club’s initial description of an oedema.

The club said in a statement that every test up to 18 May, the day of the call-up, was shared, and that a two-week recovery window counted from 17 May could allow a return to activity by Sunday 31 May, while stressing timelines can vary. It added that Santos physiotherapists also work with the national team and that the club’s medical staff are aligned with the CBF’s treatment plan.

Neymar left the Brasileiro match against Coritiba on 17 May with calf pain. He underwent imaging the next day and, according to Santos, full reports and images were sent to the CBF on the same date.

On 20 May, club doctor Rodrigo Zogaib said the forward had an oedema of around two millimetres and, with conservative treatment, could resume pitch work within up to 10 days. He added Santos aimed to deliver him fit or close to fit to Brazil on 27 May.

Between 18 and 27 May, Neymar did not complete ball work on the pitch and remained under physiotherapist Rafael Martini, who also serves the CBF. Further imaging on Wednesday, under CBF lead doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, indicated a more serious issue than first outlined.

Lasmar told reporters Neymar will need two to three weeks of recovery. That would rule him out of friendlies against Panama on 31 May in Rio de Janeiro and Egypt on 6 June in Cleveland, as well as Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco on 13 June.
