A severe storm struck Mexico City on Sunday evening, three hours before kick-off of the World Cup last-16 tie at the Azteca, and the stands have been closed to the public for now.

According to L'Équipe, the match is scheduled for two am in France, overnight from Sunday to Monday. Spectators are not allowed into the seating areas but may shelter in the stadium concourses.

On Wednesday, the Mexico v Ecuador tie at the Azteca, which finished 2-0, had its kick-off pushed back by one hour because of similar weather.

Such conditions are common in Mexico at this time of year.

It is too early to say whether the last-16 match will also be delayed.
