Sunderland face key transfer calls before 2026/27, with Simon Adingra set to return after AS Monaco declined their purchase option.

The club said in a statement that he made 17 appearances, with three goals and two assists, and wished him well with Côte d'Ivoire at the FIFA World Cup.

Adingra joined on deadline day, clearing the way for Sunderland to sign Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht. He featured regularly, though inconsistent form and Monaco missing the Champions League appear to have shaped the decision. Triggering the option would have recouped a significant portion of the £18 million paid to Brighton last summer.

Ivory Coast face Norway in the World Cup last 32 on Tuesday at 6pm UK time. On his return, Régis Le Bris will have four senior left wingers, including Nilson Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi. Romaine Mundle is expected to be fit for pre-season, though his future, like Adingra’s, appears uncertain.

Sunderland must now decide whether to reintegrate Adingra or seek a loan or permanent move elsewhere. FC Porto are the latest club to register interest in Eliezer Mayenda, though talk of a deal being close was downplayed in Portugal. Stade Rennais are keen and have held initial talks, and Mayenda is thought to prefer a permanent exit to find minutes given Brian Brobbey’s form.

Sunderland are unlikely to block a sale and could secure a major profit, in cash and SCR terms, having signed him for just under £1 million in 2023.
