Simon Adingra will return to Sunderland for pre-season after Monaco declined their purchase option, leaving Régis Le Bris with selection calls on the left. FC Porto have also joined the race for Eliezer Mayenda.

AS Monaco confirmed in a statement on Monday that they will not take up the buy clause after his half-season loan.

Adingra began brightly but tailed off, and Monaco's failure to reach the Champions League appeared to shape the outcome. Had the option been triggered, Sunderland would have recouped a significant portion of the £18 million paid to Brighton.

His return means Le Bris will have four senior left wingers. Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi were expected to play major roles last season, and Romaine Mundle is set to be fit after a hamstring issue. Sunderland must decide whether to reintegrate Adingra or arrange a loan or sale.

Ivory Coast face Norway in the World Cup last 32 on Tuesday at 6pm UK time.

Meanwhile, FC Porto are the latest to register interest in Mayenda. Suggestions that a deal was close were quickly dismissed in Portugal. Sunderland are aware of interest in the 21-year-old and several clubs remain in the race.

Stade Rennais hold strong interest and have held initial talks. Mayenda is thought to favour a permanent move to secure minutes, which could be limited given Brian Brobbey's form. Sunderland are unlikely to stand in his way, and a sale could deliver a major profit in cash and SCR terms.
