The SPU has asked the MPF for extra time to respond to a recommendation to suspend the auction of the land that houses Santos’ CT Rei Pelé training centre.
According to Globo.com, the MPF initially gave five business days for a reply, a deadline that expired last Wednesday. After receiving an official letter from the SPU, the body granted a further 10 business days.
The MPF argues the sale should be paused until all technical, legal, tax and ownership issues are fully resolved. The recommendation is extrajudicial, not binding, but serves as a formal warning and, if ignored, the MPF may pursue court action.
Questions raised include doubts over the plot’s market valuation and outstanding tax matters. There is also a dispute between the Union and Santos over improvements made on site and concerns about the auction’s competitiveness.
Prosecutor Thiago Lacerda Nobre, who oversees the case, says the auction progressed despite issues that have not been fully clarified, with the valuation central. Documents reviewed by the body also show divergences over any possible IPTU debt.
The MPF further notes that sale conditions could deter potential bidders, and points to possible contradictions in information provided during the process.
