Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin has undergone surgery on a long-standing wrist problem and shared images from hospital.
The player said in a post, “Metal out, on the mend #wristtape4life”, alongside a photo of his arm in a sling and another of metalwork that appeared to have been removed.
The 24-year-old was on the bench against Chelsea on the final day at the Stadium of Light.
Cirkin has worn protection on his wrist since last season in the Championship and endured another frustrating campaign, making just eight Premier League appearances. Sunderland finished seventh to reach the Europa League, their first European campaign since 1973-74.
He remains a popular figure after helping the club climb from League One, having joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 and won promotion under Alex Neil.
Cirkin’s future is uncertain this summer, with his contract situation one to watch as preparations begin for the new campaign.
