Sunderland ‘make approach’ for free agent-to-be Óscar Mingueza | OneFootball

Sunderland are reported to have made an early approach for Óscar Mingueza, and Celta Vigo have confirmed he will depart on a free this summer.

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Atalanta, Como and Sunderland have moved early for the 27-year-old.

A Barcelona academy graduate, Mingueza has four Spain caps and has been a regular for Celta since arriving in summer 2022. Primarily a right back, he can play left back and at centre back.

Sunderland need defensive reinforcements following the departure of Dennis Cirkin, while Lutsharel Geertruida’s future remains unresolved. Talks continue over a permanent deal, but the option to buy was not exercised and with rival interest expected, his return is far from certain.

Mingueza made 34 La Liga appearances last season, plus 11 in the Europa League. His experience and versatility mean he is expected to attract significant interest this summer.
