Sunderland’s transfer picture remains active after the window shut, with a Cowan loan being explored, Alan Browne’s return to Preston stalling, and Chemsdine Talbi’s future still in play.

According to Sunderland Echo, the club are looking to arrange a loan for academy goalkeeper Cowan, prioritising a destination where the teenager can play regularly, with any switch now needing to comply with emergency or goalkeeper-loan rules.

He is Sunderland Under-21s’ first-choice and recently signed a new three-year deal. The Black Cats have used EFL loans to blood young keepers, including Anthony Patterson, Matty Young and Adam Richardson.

Browne’s proposed return to Preston collapsed as the 31-year-old sought a three-year contract, while North End tabled a two-year offer. Sunderland were only prepared to sanction an exit late in the window, and he remains under contract until the end of this season. The midfielder spent more than a decade at Preston before joining Sunderland in 2024 and was on loan at Middlesbrough last term.

Talbi was omitted from the squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford and left out of the Europa League list while talks over a possible departure continued. Sunderland opted not to take risks with the winger while a move remained possible.

Although Premier League clubs can no longer register external signings, Sunderland can still sell Talbi to leagues where windows remain open. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad have been linked with the 21-year-old, and interest from Türkiye had been reported before its window closed. No agreement has been announced.
