Chaos now reigns in the terraces as flares are thrown from the away section towards the main stand, prompting Mannheim supporters to attempt to storm the pitch.

Referee Robert Schröder promptly sent both teams to the tunnel, while police on horseback took to the field using pepper spray to prevent Mannheim fans accessing the pitch.

The hotly contested game took on a fierce edge from the first minute as two broken chairs were launched in the direction of Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Julian Krahl.
