Edin Terzic’s first squad is telling, with Serrano omitted alongside Gorosabel and Vencedor, a clear hint towards the exit. As reported by as.com, he has named the list on the eve of a home match as routines shift towards Bundesliga practice. The squad meets this afternoon and will dine together at the team hotel.
Serrano has played only 60 minutes in pre-season, hampered by a minor left rectus femoris issue that left him behind others. Prados also misses out as doctors proceed cautiously after almost a full year lost to a serious knee injury, and Vivian remains sidelined.
Teenager Johaneko makes the cut, his speed suiting Terzic’s preference for a very advanced full back. Yuri skipped group training yesterday but will be available.
The squad is: Simón, Padilla, Paredes, Yeray, Berenguer, Sancet, Williams, Nico Williams, Guruzeta, Areso, Laporte, Rincón, Ruiz de Galarreta, Yuri, Jauregizar, Adama, Rego, Sannadi, Navarro, Gerenabarrena, Djaló, Canales and Johaneko.
The pre-match programme will begin with recognition for Elene Gurtubay and Ziara Vega for the under-19 European title they won with Spain in Bosnia in July under former Athletic coach David Aznar.
Athletic will also honour their three world champions, Simón, Laporte and Nico Williams, and national coach Luis de la Fuente. The players will be recognised on the pitch, the coach in the directors’ box, a slightly clumsy separation.
After that tribute, there will be a minute’s silence for Carmelo Cedrún, the club’s legendary goalkeeper from the 50s and 60s, who died on six July, and the home team will wear black armbands.
