Having been relegated from the Premier League last season but been able to retain Nuno Espirito Santo as manager and Jarrod Bowen as captain, West Ham are the title favourites in the Championship this season.

They have also been able to do some good business in the window, with new arrivals this week, Arne Engels and Joel Piroe, set to be involved as they seek to put a frantic few minutes at the end of their opener against Burnley behind them.

Having led 2-0 with just a few minutes of the 90 remaining, a Zian Flemming brace pegged West Ham back, forced to share a 2-2 draw with The Clarets in Lancashire.

Charlton, on the other hand, backed up a 3-1 defeat of Cheltenham Town in the first round of the EFL Cup by coming from behind to defeat Derby County by two goals to one at The Valley last weekend.

The Addicks will seek to be obdurate opposition as they travel to East London this week – with Nathan Jones potentially welcoming back long-term absentee Josh Edwards, who has now returned to full training after a 2025-26 season-ending injury he sustained in mid-January.

Here is a look at the six, but potentially seven, players who will be unavailable for the clash.

West Ham United

Tomas Soucek

Another stalwart of West Ham that has stayed on this season is Czechia international midfielder Tomas Soucek but the veteran remains sidelined for the start of the campaign.

He sustained an ankle injury as the Czechs were eliminated in the group stages of FIFA World Cup 2026, and he is continuing to work his way back to full fitness.

Pablo

Having arrived from Gil Vicente in the January transfer window, Pablo has made himself a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad at West Ham, starting at Turf Moor last week.

However, he is going to have to be assessed ahead of this one and could well be unavailable after a calf issue forced him off at half-time in their opener.

Kleiber Lamadrid

Another confirmed absentee for The Irons also comes in attack as Kleiber Lamadrid is set to be unavailable due to a muscular injury.

The Ecuadorean winger also joined West Ham in January on an initial loan deal from Deportivo La Guaira before making his switch a permanent one this summer.

Charlton Athletic

Kayne Ramsay

It was revealed on the day of their EFL Cup first round tie against Cheltenham that Kayne Ramsay would be unavailable for that game and that has remained the case at the start of this season.

The former Southampton full-back is one of two confirmed injury absentees for Charlton after missing out on the opening day against Derby.

Timothy Ouma

One player who is not yet ready to feature for another reason side from injury is new signing Timothy Ouma, who joined the club on loan from Slavia Prague earlier this month.

The defensive midfielder has played an U21 game since being left out against Derby, but Nathan Jones has explained that he has ‘hardly trained’ and remains a ‘work in progress’ in terms of his fitness.

Charlie Kelman

The other injury issue for Charlton to deal with at the start of this season is last summer’s marquee signing Charlie Kelman.

The former Leyton Orient and Queens Park Rangers striker dislocated his shoulder in a pre-season friendly against Gillingham in late-July and remains sidelined for the time being.
