The only two trophies that Lionel Messi has failed to win after latest Inter Miami heartbreak

Only two pieces of silverware have evaded Lionel Messi in his astonishing career. And the wait for one of them will continue into 2027 after Inter Miami’s latest setback.

Since winning La Liga with Barcelona in 2005, Messi has lifted an incredible 47 trophies, including two Copa Americas and the World Cup with Argentina.

But which trophies has the greatest player of his generation failed to win? We’ve done some digging to answer that question…

CONCACAF Champions Cup

The North American equivalent of the Champions League, Messi and Inter Miami have been chomping at the bit to get their hands on the trophy, but they’re still waiting.

The MLS outfit suffered a shock quarter-final elimination to Monterrey in 2024, losing both legs to the Mexican side.

Last year they made it all the way to the semi-finals, beating Jamaican outfit Cavalier and fellow MLS sides Sporting Kansas City and Los Angeles FC en route, but they were humbled by Vancouver Whitecaps (5-1 on aggregate, losing both legs).

Inter Miami got their revenge on Thomas Muller’s side in last season’s MLS Cup final – with Messi taking this list down to just two trophies in the process.

But the wait for the Champions Cup goes on after a disappointingly early elimination in 2026. Messi scored his 900th career goal against Nashville, but Inter Miami were eliminated on away goals following a 1-1 draw with Nashville.

Coupe de France

The only trophy Messi didn’t win in European football (we’re not counting competitions he never played in like the Europa League or the EFL Trophy) probably doesn’t keep him up at night.

But, considering PSG’s dominance of French football, it is definitely noteworthy that the pint-sized magician failed to win the Coupe de France during his two seasons in Paris.

In January 2022, Messi was part of the PSG team that got knocked out of the French Cup by Nice in the round of 16. Messi started that game but failed to score.

And, just months after winning the World Cup, Messi was again knocked out in the Coupe de France round of 16 as PSG lost 2-1 to Marseille in Le Classique.
