Champions League play-offs, a shootout success against Real Madrid and a Supercoppa thriller all land in Lazio’s 10-16 August archive. According to The Laziali, the club also pauses to remember goalkeeper Claudio Garella.
On 11 August 2002 at White Hart Lane, Lazio recovered from two down to draw 2-2 with Tottenham. On 12 August 1990, they lifted the Ciudad de la Línea Trophy after a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid and a 6-4 win on penalties.
The Champions League play-off path featured a 3-1 home win over Benfica on 13 August 2003, earned in punishing heat thanks to Corradi, Fiore and Mihajlovic. On 14 August 2007, a chaotic 1-1 draw with Dinamo București kept group-stage hopes alive. Five years later to the day, down to 10 men and trailing, Lazio beat Bologna 2-1 through Ciro Immobile and an own goal forced by Manuel Lazzari.
Match in focus, Supercoppa 2017, Juventus 2-3 Lazio at the Olimpico. Juve started fast, but on 32 minutes Immobile won and converted a penalty, then headed a second on 54. Paulo Dybala struck on 85 and from the spot on 91, before Luis Alberto fed Jordan Lukaku to tee up Alessandro Murgia’s 93rd-minute winner past Gianluigi Buffon.
In memory, Garella’s Lazio spell proved difficult and he was criticised, yet he later won Serie A titles with Verona in 1984-85 and Napoli in 1986-87 alongside Diego Maradona and Bruno Giordano. Known for an unorthodox style, often using his body rather than his hands, he died on 12 August 2022 following complications after heart surgery.
Birthdays this week include Bruno Giordano, Djibril Cissé, Joaquín Correa and Francesco Colonnese.
