Bayern Munich’s unbeaten Bundesliga run is over on matchday 19, Frankfurt’s defensive woes deepened and Mainz continued to build under Urs Fischer. According to Get German Football News, the weekend began with the Hamburg derby after a dire European week for German clubs.
Bayern led at Augsburg when Hiroki Ito struck on 23 minutes and it looked routine for the leaders. Manuel Baum’s side stayed compact, then raised the tempo after the break. Arthur Chaves levelled on 75 minutes and Han-Noah Massengo made it 2-1 on 81, Bayern’s first league defeat since Bochum beat them 3-2 at the Allianz Arena 322 days ago, before a late Michael Olise effort hit the bar.
Eintracht Frankfurt lost 3-1 at Hoffenheim despite leading 1-0 at half-time through Arnaud Kalimuendo. Within 14 minutes of the restart they unravelled, as Max Moerstedt and Ozan Kabak both scored from set pieces. A Vladimir Coufal cross sealed the turnaround.
Since the winter break Frankfurt have shipped 15 goals in five games and their 42 conceded in the league is joint most with Heidenheim. With just over a week left of the window, they need a head coach and defensive-minded players. Maybe Felix Magath is calling.
Mainz beat Wolfsburg 3-1 to make it one defeat in five under Fischer. They trailed and Philipp Tietz missed a first-half penalty, but he equalised after the interval before Stefan Bell and Nadiem Amiri completed the scoring. Mainz are 15th, two points clear of the automatic drop and three points behind safety.
