Tom Burwell has urged Sunderland supporters to savour a historic moment after the Black Cats clinched European football for the first time in 53 years. According to Sunderland Echo, his rallying message followed confirmation of Europa League qualification.

Régis Le Bris’ side secured seventh place with a 2-1 final day win over Club World Cup champions Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, with other results also going their way. It completed a four-year climb from League One to Europe, exactly 12 months after promotion at Wembley.

Burwell hailed the 49,000 crowd and said supporters refused to let the club be anything other than extraordinary. He noted it was their second victory over Chelsea this season and declared Sunderland are marching on Europe.

Sunderland had been widely tipped for a relegation battle after coming up through the Championship play-offs. Instead, the campaign ended in joyous scenes as players, staff, supporters and members of the ownership group celebrated around the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris said the qualification proves "anything is possible", and stressed Sunderland must stay humble with a far busier schedule ahead next season. He added the club’s structure offers a platform to keep progressing, and he will not set firm limits on what comes next.
