Tony Mowbray has returned to Blackburn Rovers for a second spell in charge, and, according to Sunderland Echo, a former Sunderland coach could join his staff.
The 62-year-old led Rovers for five years from February 2017, then moved to Sunderland after Alex Neil left for Stoke City in August 2022. He took the Black Cats to the Championship play-offs, where Luton Town ended their promotion hopes in the semi-finals.
Mowbray departed the Stadium of Light in early December 2023, later taking charge of Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion. Blackburn confirmed his return on Friday, with the head coach back on the touchline after just over a year.
Reflecting on the comeback, Mowbray said it feels like a chance to finish the job and that he has the energy for the role. He added that his family welcomed the opportunity, and he is eager to meet a squad he wants to make proud.
The familiar face under consideration is Mike Dodds, who worked alongside Mowbray at Sunderland and is currently assistant manager at Oxford United. It is claimed Mowbray is keen to reunite with Dodds as his latest reign begins.
Dodds has previously spoken of his respect for Mowbray, praising his standards, integrity and the foundations he left for Sunderland after 15 months in charge.
