Tony Mowbray has returned to Blackburn Rovers for a second spell in charge, with a reunion with former Sunderland coach Mike Dodds under consideration. According to Sunderland Echo, the 62-year-old could look to add Dodds to his backroom staff.
Mowbray previously led Rovers for five years after arriving in February 2017, before departing for Sunderland following Alex Neil’s move to Stoke City in August 2022.
He became a popular figure at the Stadium of Light, taking the Black Cats into the Championship play-offs before defeat to Luton Town in the semi-finals. He left in early December 2023, later taking charge of Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion.
He described it as a return to finish the job, with the Premier League the aim for every Championship side. He said he has the energy for the role, joked that time out had him driving the family mad, and is eager to meet a hungry squad. He added that he understands the responsibility of being head coach and wants to make supporters proud.
Dodds, a former first-team coach and interim manager at Sunderland, is currently assistant at Oxford United. He has previously praised Mowbray’s standards, integrity and the foundations he left on Wearside.
