Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison is reportedly suffering from the recurrence of a hip issue.

Spurs begin their Premier League campaign in a fortnight with a trip to Brentford, and they are hoping Maddison will make the squad for the game.

The 29-year-old only played three games last term due to a knee injury he sustained during a friendly against Newcastle United this time last year.

Maddison is currently Tottenham’s vice-captain, but is reportedly set to be named the captain when Cristian Romero leaves. Manager Roberto De Zerbi may be forced to change his plans.

Persistent injury issues have limited Maddison’s availability at Tottenham. De Zerbi could opt to appoint someone else to take over the armband from the outgoing Argentine defender.

Maddison has not featured in pre-season. De Zerbi revealed after an open training session in Sydney that the Englishman has a ‘small problem’.

The Tottenham manager decided against risking him on the pre-season tour and will hope he is available to play when the new season kicks off.

De Zerbi recently received some injury boosts after Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski stepped up their rehabilitation.

The attacking duo have participated in recent training sessions and will be desperate to play competitively in the coming weeks.
