FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta officially announced yesterday that the next presidential elections will be held on 15 March, which is less than two months away.
He is expected to run again to be elected for a second consecutive term. However, he is not the only contender. Victor Font, who finished second last time, is set to be his strongest competitor once more.
Font has launched a group called ‘Nostrales Barca’ to oppose much of what Laporta’s board has stood for during this term. According to Mundo Deportivo, Font has criticised Laporta over the chosen date. He said:
“It is obvious that these elections are being called when it suits Laporta. He doesn’t care about holding elections in the middle of a Champions League knockout tie. But we expected this; it doesn’t surprise us. We are ready. These are very important elections for the future of Barça. The time has come to give Barça back to its members.”
Subsequently, Font called for maximum participation from Barcelona members in the election. He said:
“That said, if March 15 ultimately coincides with a match against Sevilla, we demand that the game that day be exclusively for members and that tickets be priced at the minimum cost. Participation must be encouraged, and it cannot be the case that those without season tickets are discriminated against.”
Font is expected to go into further detail on the date and other topics in a full press conference. It is no surprise that he is displeased with the date Laporta has selected for the elections.
The 53-year-old is likely to be the strongest candidate capable of unseating Joan Laporta, if anyone can at all. However, even that seems highly unlikely. We will have to wait and see how things play out.
