Wallace has arrived at Grêmio as a prospect after standing out for CRB. The 21-year-old centre-back has signed for five seasons to strengthen a unit recently depleted by Viery’s sale to Fiorentina.
According to Globo.com, he came on in the second half of Saturday’s friendly for a first outing, although his formal presentation is still pending. He is the club’s first addition of the mid-season window.
He is right-footed and can play on either side of defence, favouring the right. He has also filled in at right-back and as a holding midfielder. At CRB in Série B he made 23 senior appearances, 19 this season, and aims to build on that in Porto Alegre.
Former CRB under-20 coach Otávio Augusto Leite highlights his courage, strong one-v-one defending and ability to win duels near the box through blocks and clearances. He also sees composure in possession, carrying from defence to draw a press then find a free team-mate or drive past his marker.
CRB goalkeeper Matheus Albino describes a firm defender who rarely loses 50-50s and is powerful in the air at both ends. He believes the youngster is developing his game understanding and, with his mentality, could forge a very fruitful career. Both former colleagues point to his vocal leadership on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Head coach Luís Castro also has Gustavo Martins, Wagner Leonardo, Kannemann, Luís Eduardo and Balbuena, the latter currently away with Paraguay at the World Cup.
