According to ExpressAndStar.com, there is growing belief among West Brom fans that James Morrison will land the job on a permanent basis.

He led two games last season and one earlier this campaign, then took charge for the final 11 after Eric Ramsay left. Since a disastrous start at Oxford, Albion are unbeaten in 10 with 18 points, sealing Championship survival.

Across his interim spells he has overseen 13 league matches, with five wins and only one defeat.

Past caretakers include Brian Whitehouse in the 1970s, two wins from three after Don Howe, and John Wile, one from four. In 1997 Arthur Mann won one of three, and Richie Barker posted a 100 per cent return from his single game.

John Trewick lost both matches. Cyrille Regis had two stints, the latter with Allan Evans bringing one win from one. Frank Burrows failed to win after Gary Megson’s 2004 dismissal.

Nigel Pearson won three of four after Bryan Robson. Craig Shakespeare won his only match. Keith Downing took one win from six before Pepe Mel arrived.

Jimmy Shan’s 2019 run is the closest in length, seven wins from 12 before a play-off defeat to Aston Villa. Morrison has now had three caretaker stints and, if appointed, would be only the second interim to go permanent after Brian Talbot, who won four games in the late 1980s.
