West Bromwich Albion face an anxious wait after reports of an alleged Profitability and Sustainability breach that could bring a points deduction. The club said in a statement that it believes it has fully complied and is cooperating with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit, adding that the final four matches remain the priority for James Morrison’s side.

It remains unclear which stage Albion are at, when the case will be decided, or what sanction might follow. Supporters of Albion and other relegation-threatened clubs have begun to speculate about the outcomes.

Under PSR rules, clubs must file 24/25 accounts by 31 December before compliance is assessed. If a breach is identified, a compliance report is issued, clubs then have 14 days to respond, and a hearing must take place within 28 days. A hearing could therefore fall after the final day.

Initial reports suggest any alleged breach is minimal. A breach of up to two million pounds carries a three-point penalty, rising to a four-point deduction if losses reach four million pounds. Mitigation can apply when losses fall year on year, which would apply in Albion’s case, and could restore one point of any penalty.

Albion’s immediate task is to collect as many points as possible to build a cushion. Should a deduction arrive, the club is likely to challenge it via an EFL appeal and, if necessary, court action. Securing safety on the pitch would avoid further complications.
