According to Globo.com, a panel of 50 Globo and affiliate journalists, commentators and narrators ranked Brazil’s greatest derbies, with Gre-Nal named the biggest by a wide margin.

Votes were ranked five-three-one, with participants drawn from 11 states.

Gre-Nal was cited by 47 of 50 and scored more than double the runner-up. Corinthians v Palmeiras drew 31 mentions, Atlético-MG v Cruzeiro 24, Flamengo v Vasco 17, and Flamengo v Fluminense 12.

Atlético-MG host Cruzeiro on Tuesday at Arena MRV, while Grêmio face Internacional on Thursday in the match that closes the quarter-finals.

Bahia v Vitória received 10 mentions, Remo v Paysandu seven, and both Corinthians v São Paulo and Athletico v Coritiba were selected once.

Santos and Botafogo went unmentioned among their local rivalries. Fortaleza v Ceará and Goiás v Vila Nova were also absent, as were Pernambuco derbies involving Náutico, Santa Cruz and Sport.

In the overall points, Gre-Nal led first and second places, followed by Corinthians v Palmeiras, Atlético v Cruzeiro, Flamengo v Vasco, then Flamengo v Fluminense. For third place, Corinthians v Palmeiras had 13 votes, Ba-Vi nine, and Cruzeiro v Atlético and Flamengo v Vasco seven each.

Tiago Medeiros highlighted polarised two-team rivalries. Luiz Carlos Jr favoured Gre-Nal, Atlético v Cruzeiro and Ba-Vi for their impact across the state, and Fernando Prass ranked Gre-Nal, Palmeiras v Corinthians and Vasco v Flamengo from personal experience.
