West Brom have added Gavin Strachan to James Morrison’s coaching staff, the former Celtic assistant arriving with strong endorsements. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he links up with Albion after helping deliver sustained success in Glasgow.
His appointment ends a six-year spell at Parkhead under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill, capped by a Premiership and Scottish Cup double last season. He had been assistant at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United before joining Celtic in June 2020.
On leaving, O’Neill hailed Strachan’s vital contribution and wished him well. The son of former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, he came through Coventry City’s academy.
“I signed him as a player and he did very well,” said Peterborough director of football Barry Fry. “He’s a top coach, a top guy, he develops players brilliantly.” He told The Athletic in 2020.
Strachan worked alongside Darren Ferguson at Doncaster, suffering relegation to League Two then winning promotion in 2016/17 before a mid-table finish. Ferguson quit in 2018, returned to Peterborough in January 2019 and took Strachan with him.
Strachan called his 2020 Celtic move an opportunity he could not turn down, while Lennon described him as the outstanding candidate. His set-piece input stood out, with Postecoglou crediting him after four goals from corner phases in the opening three Premiership games of 2022/23, expertise that could aid Albion next season.
