Sheffield Wednesday fans will have been delighted to see former favourite Anthony Musaba score against local rivals Sheffield United on Saturday.

It has been an excellent start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday in League One.

Wednesday were relegated from the Championship last season after a nightmare campaign that saw them spend over six months in administration, but things are looking much brighter at Hillsborough under new owner David Storch.

After bringing in 18 signings over the summer, many expected Wednesday's new-look squad to take some time to gel, but that has not proven to be the case.

While performances have not always been convincing, the Owls have won four of their first five games in League One this season, with some of the new additions already making a big impact for Henrik Pedersen's side.

Wednesday recorded their third consecutive win with a 2-1 victory at Peterborough United on Saturday to go top of the table, with Josh Feeney's own goal and Yan Valery's header either side of Ben Woods' equaliser securing another three points.

After the jubilant scenes in the away end at the Weston Homes Stadium at lunchtime, Owls supporters will have followed the results from the rest of the day's EFL games later in the afternoon, and their eyes will have been particularly drawn to events at Bramall Lane involving local rivals Sheffield United.

It is fair to say that the balance of power in the Steel City in recent years has been in Sheffield United's favour, but with Wednesday now under new ownership, that may be about to change.

It has been a difficult summer for the Blades as their financial issues begin to pile up, and despite selling Gustavo Hamer to Coventry City for £6 million, Callum O'Hare to Wrexham for £7 million and Andre Brooks to Norwich City in a deal that could eventually be worth as much as £10 million, they were unable to bring in replacements, leaving manager Chris Wilder short in the attacking areas.

There have also been rumours that United could be hit with a 12-point deduction after the company that was used to buy the club, COH Sports Bidco Limited (CSBL), was placed into liquidation by the High Court last month, but owner Steven Rosen dismissed those fears last week, insisting the situation is different to Wednesday's previous plight.

Amid their off-field woes, it had been a decent start to the season on the pitch for the Blades as they went unbeaten in their opening four league games, but they suffered their first defeat of the campaign as they were beaten 3-1 by Norwich at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

While any United defeat will always be well-received by Owls supporters, this one would have been particularly sweet given that their former favourite, Anthony Musaba, was among the Canaries' goalscorers.

Musaba joined Wednesday from French side Monaco in the summer of 2023, and while he struggled for consistency at times, he scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 80 appearances during his two-year spell at the club.

The Owls sold Musaba to Turkish side Samsunspor last summer for a fee in the region of just €1 million as former owner Dejphon Chansiri desperately attempted to raise the funds required to cling on to power at Hillsborough, and just six months later, the 25-year-old made the move to Fenerbahçe in a reported €6 million deal.

Musaba scored two goals and registered six assists in 24 games for Fenerbahçe in the second half of last season, but he made a surprise return to English football this summer when he joined Norwich on a season-long loan.

It has not taken Musaba long to announce himself to the Canaries faithful, providing an assist in the 4-1 home win over Burnley last month before opening his account for the club with a stunning strike to give Philippe Clement's men the lead against Sheffield United on Saturday.

While Patrick Bamford equalised for the Blades shortly after, goals from Mo Toure and Mathias Kvistgaarden sealed all three points for Norwich, with Musaba's outstanding individual performance helping to inspire his side to victory.

Given the clear potential he showed during his time in South Yorkshire, Wednesday supporters were frustrated to see Musaba depart for a cut-price fee when, in normal circumstances, they would likely have been able to demand at least triple the figure they received.

However, while Owls fans will still be disappointed that Musaba is no longer on their books, they would no doubt have been thrilled to see him inflict defeat on their bitter rivals on Saturday, with the loss only increasing the sense of unease at Bramall Lane.
