Sunderland are set for a modest summer lift from FIFA’s Club Benefit Programme after a record 12 players featured at the World Cup, with academy graduate Jordan Pickford starring for England and Jordan Henderson influential behind the scenes.
Switzerland’s quarter-final defeat to Argentina ended the club’s involvement. According to Sunderland Echo, FIFA pays clubs per day a player is at the tournament, estimated at about €5,000, so Sunderland are expected to receive a seven-figure sum.
Wilson Isidor was the only Sunderland player to exit in the groups, though he made history with a superb goal for Haiti. Including pre-tournament camp days, his stint is estimated to be worth around €125,000.
Approximate payouts rise to about €150,000 for eight players eliminated in the round of 32, namely Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida, Brian Brobbey, Noah Sadiki, Arthur Masuaku, Nilson Angulo, Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra. Geertruida’s loan from RB Leipzig is thought to have run until 30 June.
Paraguay’s run to the last 16 with Omar Alderete should bring roughly €175,000. For Chemsdine Talbi and Granit Xhaka, it likely edges close to €200,000. Overall, payments are put at about €1.55 million, or £1,160,000, though they are typically split with clubs from the previous two years, and many signed last summer.
FIFA also pays €2,362 per qualifying appearance, slightly boosting totals for regulars such as Xhaka, Sadiki and Alderete. Players will return in phases, with some due on the USA tour next week, while Xhaka and Talbi take a break before likely rejoining in August.
