Why Wolves must seal Man Utd transfer - Sam Johnstone is key

Wolves should look to sign Man Utd's Radek Vitek, and with the Red Devils keen on Sam Johnstone, there could be a way to get a deal done.

After an embarrassing season that resulted in relegation from the Premier League, Wolves need a big summer window to back new boss Cesar Peixoto.

The decision to sack Rob Edwards was a controversial one, but Wanderers have had a positive start to the window, with Andre agreeing a new contract, and Mexican striker Raul Jimenez returning to the club.

Kieran Trippier, providing he can be convinced to stay, is another statement addition, and Peixoto will surely be trying to convince the full-back to buy-in to his project, even if he is seemingly angry at Edwards’ sacking.

However, more work is required to make Wolves successful, and one of the immediate priorities is going to be signing a new goalkeeper.

Wolves set for goalkeeping shake-up this summer

Jose Sa was number one for the majority of last season, but he is widely expected to depart following relegation, even with Peixoto’s appointment, with the ex-Olympiacos man certain to have admirers.

A fresh start will be seen as ideal for all parties, and the Portuguese stopper will represent a decent saving in terms of salary.

Sam Johnstone is behind Sa right now, and, in theory, he could be a decent Championship keeper, as he has proven himself at this level over the years with Aston Villa and West Brom.

But, his time at Wolves hasn’t really gone to plan, as Johnstone hasn’t grasped the opportunities that he was given, whilst his record for missing games has left some questioning his commitment to the club.

So, with Man Utd reported to be tracking their former keeper, he is another that may welcome a fresh start, and it’s hard to see Wolves standing in his way.

Radek Vitek could become the long-term number one at Wolves

Man Utd’s interest in Johnstone offers an interesting dynamic going into the market, as Wolves should be looking at the Red Devils’ Radek Vitek.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated at Old Trafford, but he is at the stage in his career where he needs regular game time.

A loan move to Bristol City was sorted for last season, and it worked out very well. Vitek was named Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year at Ashton Gate, with his performances for the Robins catching the eye.

The Czech youth international is a very capable shot-stopper, and he also has a presence and is aggressive in how he looks to command his box.

Of course, there are areas of his game that he can improve, but Vitek is a good Championship keeper already, and he has the tools to become a top player at this level, and potentially even higher.

That should make him a very appealing prospect to Wolves, as they will need at least one new keeper if Sa and Johnstone leave.

Given his profile, Vitek ticks all the boxes, and the Black Country side should be using Man Utd’s interest in Johnstone to ensure that they are at the front of the queue when it comes to trying to do a deal for the youngster.

Obviously, the age difference means Wolves would have to pay a fee, but it could turn out to be a shrewd long-term investment, and with Man Utd looking at Johnstone, negotiations should be a smoother process.

The three major moves Wolves have made so far in the market show they are serious about going up, but, as we know, a good keeper is crucial to any successful team - which Peixoto will be aware of.

Ultimately, it’s a signing Wolves simply must get right, and in Vitek they would be getting someone who has not only shown he can do well at this level, but also grow with the club as they look to get back to mixing it with the best in the country on a regular basis in the years to come.
