As per journalist Alan Nixon via The Sun, the 31-year-old shot-stopper - who was born in Wrexham and began his career with the Red Dragons - is being lined up to return to the club where it all started.

Ward has barely kicked a ball at club level in recent times, with just two outings for Leicester this past season, but he could be set for a monumental return to the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is seemingly eyeing up a comeback for Ward as competition for first-choice goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

Ward was sold to Liverpool in 2012 for a reported fee of £100k - having never played a single game for Wrexham.

His exit to Merseyside marked the beginning of a somewhat successful career that has seen him win the FA Cup with Leicester City and reach a Europa League final with Liverpool.

Although - Ward has endured a difficult final season at the King Power, notably being substituted at half-time during a 4-0 drumming to Newcastle United - he conceded three goals in the first 45.

As the years have passed, Ward has built up top-flight experience with Leicester City, as well as spending a season on loan at Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

Aside from his loan in West Yorkshire where he played 46 times, Ward has struggled for regular game time throughout his career - often serving as a backup.

Danny Ward would bring Championship experience to Wrexham AFC

The potential signing of Ward does represent how Wrexham are preparing for the step-up to the Championship - where more players with experience in the higher leagues will be key to the dressing room.

Ward's career does somewhat mirror Wrexham's own ambitions - a player who started at the club before progressing to the upper echelons of English football.

The sum of money they received for Ward would certainly have been significant at the time, as Wrexham were playing in the now-named National League - so for a local lad to return home in this fashion would excite the supporters.

The timing does appear ideal for both parties, with Ward likely seeking a move to somewhere he can battle for game time - while Wrexham need more players with experience.

Even as a second-choice, Ward's proven track record in cup competitions would benefit Wrexham's chances in them - as they continue their pursuit of reaching the Premier League.
