Zico has welcomed Pedro’s Brazil recall, saying Carlo Ancelotti has corrected an injustice by selecting the Flamengo striker in his first list for friendlies since the World Cup. Winger Samuel Lino is also in the squad.
"Bringing in new players from here is a lift," Zico said, speaking to ge.
Ancelotti named his squad on Wednesday. Zico argued Pedro should have gone to the last World Cup and called him Brazil’s best centre-forward, comments made as he received a Doctor Honoris Causa from Universidade Candido Mendes, becoming the institution’s first athlete to receive the honour.
Brazil will play three friendlies in the next FIFA window, facing Australia on 25 and 29 this month, first in Townsville then in Brisbane. The delegation will then travel to Calcutta to meet India, with the final game on the third in India.
The league resumes on eight October at Vila Belmiro against Santos, so Pedro and Samuel Lino are not expected to miss the 29th round. Zico also noted the call up of right back Matheuzinho, a Flamengo academy graduate now at Corinthians.
Flamengo could still lose others to national teams. Jorginho is on Italy’s preliminary list, Arrascaeta and Varela are regarded as certainties for Uruguay, Plata and Valencia should be called by Ecuador, Jorge Carrascal is favoured for Colombia, and Joaquín Freitas could return for Argentina.
