Liverpool have got a problem to solve on the right side of their attack.
Richard Hughes allowed Mohamed Salah to leave for free - ripping up the Egyptian King’s £400k per week contract one year early.
And their preferred option to replace the 34-year-old - Yan Diomande - is off the table. It looks certain that the 19-year-old will be staying at RB Leipzig and - besides the favourites to land the Ivorian’s signature when he does leave are Paris Saint-Germain.
Some other players have been suggested - including Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Yankuba Minteh and Said El Mala - and the other frontrunner is believed to be Bradley Barcola.
But the costs for the PSG winger threaten to run to around £130m before wages are factored in. That means Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola need to make some contingency plans - including in-house solutions.
One report this week suggested that Jeremie Frimpong would be used a lot more as a right-sided attacker than a right-back next season.
And now comes the news claiming that Harvey Elliott is being looked at as an alternative to Salah for next season. That’s according to a report in Football Insider - which claims Iraola will give the Englishman a chance to win him over in preseason.
“Andoni Iraola is planning to offer Harvey Elliott a chance to impress in pre-season to win his place back in the Liverpool squad,” the report reads.
“Iraola is keen to take a look at Elliott and will include him in his plans for next season if he impresses in training.
“The Reds are keen to add to their attacking options this summer after Mo Salah's departure, with Elliott possibly set to return to the fold.”
Elliott returned to the AXA Training Centre following an unproductive spell on loan at Aston Villa. The 23-year-old was expected to complete a £35m transfer as a formality after a year on loan but the Villans backed out of the deal.
The England under-21 legend is now back on Merseyside with only one year left on his deal and has already held talks with Iraola about his role going forward.
Given Richard Hughes’ trouble landing a proper replacement for Salah we could see Elliott come into the reckoning as we move towards the Premier League’s kickoff next month.
