Mikel Arteta has rarely been able to call on a fully fit Arsenal squad this season. Yet, despite setbacks and long rehabilitation spells, the Spaniard’s side remain firmly in the title race. With the Premier League entering a decisive phase, every Arsenal injury update carries weight, shaping the mood in north London and beyond.
After weeks of concern over key absentees, Arsenal have welcomed back two influential figures. Martin Odegaard, their Norwegian playmaker, returned from a shoulder problem in time to feature on the bench in the 2-1 win at St James’ Park. Bukayo Saka has also rejoined the fold in recent matches, a timely lift as the club push to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
Their return has steadied Arteta’s hand but several important players remain sidelined. The Arsenal manager continues to balance recovery programmes with the relentless demands of domestic and European fixtures.

Noni Madueke’s knee injury against Manchester City proved a serious setback. The £48.5 million summer signing had been one of Arsenal’s brightest attacking outlets before being substituted at half-time during the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Arteta explained, “He had an issue very early in the match and he wasn’t well enough to continue.”
Medical scans have at least confirmed that the England international avoided anterior cruciate ligament damage. Nevertheless, Madueke’s absence is felt keenly and his potential return is estimated for late November.
Piero Hincapie, the Ecuadorian defender who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, has been conspicuous by his absence. After featuring from the bench in the Champions League against Athletic Club, he was left out of the squad for both the City and Newcastle fixtures.
Asked about the situation, Arteta admitted, “Odegaard wasn’t fit enough to be [on the bench], Piero as well, he’s out of the squad.”
The exact nature of Hincapie’s problem remains unclear, leaving his return date uncertain. His versatility in defence has been missed as Arsenal look to maintain their defensive solidity during a packed schedule.
Kai Havertz’s rehabilitation appears to be progressing well after knee surgery. Arteta praised the German’s determination to accelerate his recovery, saying, “He’s starting to load the knee and started to do some bits. As I said before, I think we’re taking it from weeks to months. But knowing Kai, I cannot give you any timescale because I know what he’s going to try to do.”
The manager highlighted the difficult decision Havertz faced in undergoing the procedure, commending both the player and the medical staff. Arsenal hope to see him back in November.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus remains a longer-term absentee. The Brazilian striker, who had major surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, continues to train with the ball but is not yet close to joining full sessions.
Arteta confirmed earlier in September: “[Jesus] had major surgery that was going to take him many, many months… it would be between December and January. Hopefully, we did it wrong and he comes back earlier. But at the moment, the provision was very clear.”
Injuries have been a familiar theme during Arteta’s tenure but Arsenal have built resilience in dealing with them. The gradual return of key players will be crucial as they look to maintain momentum in the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
Supporters will be buoyed by the sight of Odegaard and Saka back in action but the fitness of Madueke, Hincapie, Havertz and Jesus remains a storyline that could shape Arsenal’s ambitions in the months ahead.
