Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal’s defensive strength is the ‘platform to win games’ after the club’s latest shut-out.
Arsenal eased past Wigan Athletic 4-0 on Sunday to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
A four-goal blitz inside the opening 27 minutes took the headlines, but Arteta was keen to praise his side’s defensive work.
He credited Arsenal’s desire to defend, even with a comfortable lead, as the Gunners recorded their 22nd clean sheet of the campaign in all competitions.
“It’s a big number [22 clean sheet] obviously, and we’re still in February. So that’s the platform to win games,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“When you see we are 4-0 [up], the ball is over and 10 players sprinting back, that’s the desire that you have to play with.
“The excitement is just for tonight. Tomorrow we start with Wolves and we know how tough that game is going to be in the Premier League. So let’s keep going.”
