After a thorough review of the logistical and organizational challenges involved in moving the match outside Spain, LaLiga has decided to cancel the 17th round fixture between FC Barcelona and Villarreal, which was initially scheduled to take place in Miami, United States.
This decision follows opposition from several parties, including Real Madrid, the Spanish Football Federation, and the Spanish Players' Association, all of whom considered that relocating the match would present serious organizational and scheduling challenges.
The Catalan club issued a statement confirming that it respects LaLiga’s decision and understands the circumstances that led to the cancellation.
"FC Barcelona respects the decision to cancel the match against Villarreal in Miami for the 17th round of LaLiga, just as it previously respected and accepted the idea of playing there. The club regrets the missed opportunity to promote the competition’s image in a strategic market, which offers growth prospects and generates resources for all.It values the unconditional support and affection of its fans in the United States and deeply regrets that they will not be able to attend this official match in their own country."
It is worth noting that a similar move—unprecedented in European football history—was recently taken by UEFA and the Italian league, who decided to relocate the AC Milan vs Como match to Perth, Australia, instead of the San Siro stadium in Milan.
