Some interesting comments from this BBC Sport pundit on Newcastle United.

Chris Sutton speaking ahead of Saturday’s match.

Newcastle United kicking off after the latest (October) international break.

Facing Brighton at the Amex Stadium in a 3pm kick-off.

The Newcastle United players knowing how massive this will be if they can make it three wins in a row, with Benfica in the Champions League to follow on Tuesday night.

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United now nine weeks into the new season.

Chris Sutton talking to BBC Sport – 16 October 2025:

“I was impressed by Newcastle when I watched them against Forest. Their midfield is so powerful, and they have got good options out wide.

“I don’t think they will start firing properly up front until Yoane Wissa is fit to help Nick Woltemade but, defensively, they look pretty solid and that has been backed up by their results on the road.

“Newcastle have drawn all three of their away games in the league this season, without scoring or conceding.

“The goals will come, but I don’t see them as having enough to beat a Brighton team who always look dangerous even when they are not playing that well.

“The Seagulls have drawn two out of three at home so far, so I guess this has got a draw written all over it, too.

“Prediction: Brighton 1 Newcastle 1”

I think that is a pretty fair overview from the BBC Sport pundit.

Chris Sutton on the money this time?

Well, along with many other pundits, he is going for a draw in this match. Hardly a surprise when three of the last four Brighton v Newcastle matches at the Amex Stadium have ended in a draw, also five of the last seven ending in stalemate.

Newcastle United have actually scored 11 goals in their last four games, with four against Bradford (Carabao Cup), one against Arsenal (Premier League), four against Union S-G (Champions League) and two against Forest (Premier League).

Brighton have conceded at least once in all of their seven Premier League matches this season, whilst Nick Pope has kept a clean sheet in five of Newcastle’s seven in the league. The partnership of Thiaw and Botman in front of Pope has impressed with each passing game and as a team, United have defended really well.

The starting eleven that Eddie Howe plays today, ahead of Benfica on Tuesday, could be key as to how likely Newcastle fans will see this as a winnable game, rather than maybe thinking yet another draw is most likely.

Brighton are dangerous opponents but very up and down, whilst as mentioned above, their defence doesn’t appear to be the strength it once was.
