Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has been called into question by Uli Hoeneß in recent days, with the Bayern patron now facing criticism from within his own ranks

Last Friday, Uli Hoeneß publicly cast doubt on a contract extension for sporting director Max Eberl, estimating the chances of a working paper valid beyond 2027 as „60:40“ in an interview with Der Spiegel

This is one of the reasons why the Bayern patron is now facing criticism within the supervisory board in connection with Max Eberl, according to Sport1. The background: It was Hoeneß who appointed Eberl as sporting director almost single-handedly. At the time, he succeeded the failed Oliver Kahn

Should Eberl now also be replaced by a new man after a short time, this would be Hoeneß‘ second consecutive bad appointment – at least that’s how some behind the scenes see it

Hoeneß said after the cup final regarding Eberl’s future: „I know what the people at the club think. So I don’t want to say anything that I can’t stand by later.“ The message is clear: even if Hoeneß wants to keep Eberl, he won’t be able to do it alone. After all, he is not the only one who decides on the supervisory board – even if it often looks like that from the outside

This is why Eberl is being criticized

According to BILD, there are two main points within the club’s management that are blamed on the sporting director.

Firstly, Bayern bosses are said to be of the opinion that Eberl sometimes acts too quickly when it comes to transfers and therefore accepts too high sums. Particularly in the last summer window, the impression is said to have arisen internally that the 52-year-old wanted to push ahead with too many personnel matters at the same time.

Names such as Xavi Simons or Jamie Gittens were discussed at Säbener Straße, but were not approved by the supervisory board. The financial framework conditions in particular are said to have played a decisive role in this.

On the other hand, those responsible apparently want more rigor in contract negotiations. The costly extensions with Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano and Alexander Nübel in particular are said to have been viewed critically internally.

Relationship with the supervisory board is considered tense

Another point of criticism concerns the communication between Eberl and the supervisory board. According to BILD, there is a feeling within the club management that the sporting director often presents his transfer and squad plans very late.

In some cases, talks are said to have been well advanced before the supervisory board was fully involved, which has repeatedly caused tensions, particularly in the case of major transfer packages that require mandatory approval.

In addition, there is apparently the impression that Eberl is more difficult to deal with criticism than previous Bayern managers. Hoeneß had already explained this in September 2025 in the Doppelpass on Sport1: „Such a tough job means that you have arguments and different opinions. Karl-Heinz and I argued like broom bats. But when the door closed behind us, it was okay again. Max is quite sensitive about that.“

This means that the situation surrounding Eberl remains complicated. The sporting director is under scrutiny both in sporting terms and internally, while Hoeneß himself is increasingly coming under scrutiny. One thing is clear: at FC Bayern, it is no longer just about the future of a single official, but also about the question of who bears responsibility for the latest personnel decisions.
