Brighton rose to sixth in the Premier League with commanding 3-0 win over struggling Chelsea, who slipped to a fifth straight defeat.

The host struck early via Ferdi Kadioğlu from a corner in the third minute, before Jack Hinshelwood doubled the lead after claims of a handball by a teammate at the opposite end.

Danny Welbeck then added a third, a stunning finish off the back of a cross from De Cuyper to secure a comprehensive victory.

As it happened

Brighton wasted no time asserting control, taking the lead inside three minutes as a well-worked corner routine caught Chelsea off guard, with Kadioglu converting easily.

Chelsea attempted to respond, but found themselves repeatedly exposed through misplaced passes, with Brighton thereby able to capitalize through quick counters.

Mitoma proved central to Brighton’s attacking threat, using his pace and agility to consistently frustrate Malo Gusto in one-on-one situations.

Their second goal arrived amid controversy, as Brighton doubled their advantage following a passage of play that appeared to involve a handball from Minteh on the opposite side of the pitch.

Despite protests from both players and the Chelsea bench, the referee let play continue and a long ball from Rutter to Hinshelwood sealed the deal.

Chelsea showed brief glints of improvement, registering six attempts all in all, but their attempts lacked cutting edge, with none being on target.

Delap in particular, endured a difficult outing, struggling to make a dent of any sort and failing to test Brighton’s back four.

A third and final goal came from Welbeck, who finished confidently, following a precise cross from De Cuyper, putting the game beyond doubt.

The results highlighted contratsing trajectories for the two sides.

Brighton’s ability to absorb pressure and break quickly proved decisive, with their counter-attacking structure causing persistent problems. Chelsea, meanwhile, seemed disjointed.

The absence of several key players continues to exacerbate the poor run of results, with the Blues losing all five of their previous matches.

With both sides now closely positioned in the table, this result could prove significant in the race for European qualification.

Brighton appear to be building momentum at a crucial stage of the season, while Chelsea must quickly regroup to avoid falling behind even further.
