Chelsea suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Kaoru Mitoma could’ve broken the deadlock inside the opening three minutes after he got onto Pascal Gross’ cross at the back post, but his volley was palmed away by Robert Sanchez.
From the resulting corner, Ferdi Kadioglu reacted quickest in the box and rifled a volley home to open the scoring.
In the 15th minute, Jan Paul Van Hecke almost doubled the host’s lead after he met Gross’ cross, but his header was kept out by Sanchez.
Moments later, a poor error from Sanchez handed the ball to Yankuba Minteh, who picked out Jack Hinshelwood, only for Trevoh Chalobah to heroically clear off the line.
Two minutes after the restart, Chelsea produced their first real attacking moment, as Romeo Lavia almost restored parity for the Blues, but his effort from range flashed just past the post.
Despite the visitors’ bright start to the second half, Hinshelwood doubled the Seagulls’ lead in the 56th minute, finishing off a blistering counterattack.
Just past the hour mark, Mitoma came close to scoring Brighton’s third after he teed himself up for a volley, but his effort flashed wide of the top corner.
Moments later, Sanchez was called into action, making two superb stops to thwart Kadioglu.
At the other end, Alejandro Garnacho saw his curling effort sail wide of the far post as Chelsea searched for a way back into the game.
On the stroke of full-time, Danny Welbeck completed the scoring, finishing off De Cuyper’s cross.
The result sees Chelsea slump to a fifth straight league defeat without finding the net for the first time since 1912.
